Marginal Revolution: LA Times Ranks Teachers

August 20, 2010

We cannot simultaneously claim, however, that teachers are vitally important for the future of our children and also that their effectiveness should not be measured.  As systems like this become more common students will benefit enormously and so will teachers.

Why McDonald’s Fries Taste So Good

August 16, 2010

A natural flavor is not necessarily more healthful or purer than an artificial one. When almond flavor — benzaldehyde — is derived from natural sources, such as peach and apricot pits, it contains traces of hydrogen cyanide, a deadly poison. Benzaldehyde derived by mixing oil of clove and amyl acetate does not contain any cyanide. Nevertheless, it is legally considered an artificial flavor and sells at a much lower price. Natural and artificial flavors are now manufactured at the same chemical plants, places that few people would associate with Mother Nature.

More than you ever wanted to know about the flavor industry.

Facebook | HipHop for PHP: six months later

August 14, 2010

From a community perspective, there have been about fifteen external patches submitted that went straight into trunk and about another five that focused on the open source build system. The speed of these patches have started to increase in the past month. As ocProducts started using HipHop in production, they reported a small number of crash bugs which we hadn’t yet encountered in production but likely would have in the future. Chris Graham ran RoadSend and phpc test suites against HipHop which resulting in it our passing 98% of tests and forty language oriented bug reports.

Open source is awesome. Facebook is pretty cool too.
